The growing number of students and the need for larger and more flexible classrooms prompted the construction of Echo, the newest educational building at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). UNStudio designed the sustainable building, which stands out for its flexible use and open layout. Bamboo is the most eye-catching material in the interior.
The so-called bamboo ribs, which recur throughout the building, visually support the various layers of the building. More than 37,674 ft² of bamboo was used for the floors, furniture, wall and ceiling finishes. Architect Ben van Berkel, UNStudio, explains:
“We chose bamboo because it is an extremely renewable and sustainable material. Bamboo is a beautiful and environmentally friendly product that we incorporate more and more into our current projects.”
TU Delft’s sustainability goal is ambitious: by 2030, the campus must be CO2 neutral and circular. Building projects such as the Echo education building, which will open in May 2022, must therefore meet very high standards. Echo is the first energy-producing building on the campus, thanks to solar panels, efficient insulation and thermal storage. TU Delft Construction Project Manager Kübra Öztürk explains:
“A sustainable educational building also requires sustainable use of materials and design. The building materials used include bamboo and recycled PET bottles. And no less than ninety percent of the furniture in the building was reused.”
The greatest challenge for MOSO® was the uniformity in the color tone of the bamboo materials. Bamboo panels and veneers were produced in different factories in China and processed by different companies in Europe into floors, furniture and wall finishes. MOSO® kept on top of the deliveries, where possible. Paul Vriend, commercial manager Benelux explains:
“The production and processing of bamboo largely determines the color tone of the final product, which can range from very light to very dark. Where some designers and users prefer a combination of colors, here we opted for unity within a color range. Looking at the bigger picture, we are satisfied with the result and we are now even more aware of where the real challenges lie in the supply chain.”
