The Riverside building in Santa Comba Dão, Portugal, is a bold example of adaptive reuse and environmentally conscious design. Originally an unfinished structure overlooking the Dão River, the building was thoughtfully renovated by MJARC Arquitetos with a clear objective: to preserve and revitalise rather than demolish. More than 90% of the original beams, columns, and slabs were retained. These sustainable construction practices did not go unnoticed, as the building was nominated for the Archdaily Building of the Year award.
Contributing to the building’s renewed identity is the façade, consisting of vertically placed bamboo cladding boards. MOSO® Bamboo X-treme closed cladding reaches fire class B without the use of expensive and eco-damaging fire retardants. Moreover, the sustainable boards contribute to green building certifications such as BREEAM and LEED, reinforcing the architect’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
